1. After filling your water brush, dab some clean water on each of the color dots to activate them and soften them, don’t worry about activating the white gouache until the last step. Starting with the flower centers apply a concentrated amount of gamboge yellow to the flower middles and dot gamboge in the stamens above the center that are outlined. Don’t worry too much about being staying in the lines here because we will be adding more color later. Let flower centers dry.
2. Next we will fill in the leaves and stems. Paint leaves one at a time by first laying down a clean layer of water on paper. While paper is still wet apply sap green along the outside edge of the leaf and gold green to the center. These colors will blend together to make the leaf have more depth. Repeat this process for every leaf and paint stems with a mix of sap green and gold green to add variation. Let leaves and stems dry.
3. Next, mix equal parts peacock blue and lavender to use on the upper flower petals. Paint an even wash of your blue lavender mix on to the top petals, and while the paint is still wet add spots of more concentrated paint mix to add color and texture variation to the petals. If added spots aren’t blending with paint use a little water and your brush to help. Let dry completely.
4. For the bottom flower petals we will use the same technique we used for the leaves. Paint a layer of clean water on the bottom flower petals and paint a line of violet around the edge. While paint is still wet add a concentrated amount of lavender to the petal centers and use your brush to help blend the two colors. Let dry completely.
5.Now we add the details that really make this painting pop! Using a concentrated violet and the tip of your brush carefully add thick lines of violet along the bottom purple flower petals to give dimension. Using the same concentrated violet outline the top of the blue flower petals and add three to four lines per petal going radiating from the center. You can even add some thicker outline lines on the top petals like you did with the purple bottom petals.
6.Next mix two parts sap green to one part peacock blue to create a dark green and add the same thick lines to the leaves and stems. Only add the thick line to one side of the leaves and a little of the stems. Be careful not to add too many and lose the effect.
7.Last we are going to go back to the flower centers to make sure they pop! Finally activate the white gouache with water. Make sure to mix water in well because white gouache has a tendency to be a little chunky and will leave chunks of paint on your paper. Once the white gouache is well mixed, mix two parts gamboge yellow to one part white gouache. Making sure flower petals are completely dry, add dots of the yellow white mixture back over the flower center and above to make the floating stamens pop against the blue petals. Let dry completely.
General Tips:
Always use clean water when laying down a water before adding color. A hint of left over color will change the look of the painting. Use paper towel to make sure brush is clean in between colors.
It is super important to allow elements to fully dry before moving to next step. This is especially important for the touching flower petals, do one at a time and make sure the neighbors are dry before painting to avoid colors bleeding. You do not need a lot of water or paint and this will allow the elements to dry faster.
